I’ve recently started to work on a personal project about my mother. She died when I was quite young, so my memory of her is poor. There is this one memory though wich keeps coming back to me. I have this vague image of her in my mind of the way she used to sit. That image seems to tell so much about her….what kind of woman she was besides being my mother.

I tried to look for a photograph in our family album of her sitting to bring my memory alive, but there is no photo of her that resonates with my memory. Although I do not know exactly how she was sitting, the image in my mind keeps coming up. As if I can reconstruct her that way. If only I can collect those memories so I would be able to really see her.

I have started to photograph many different people, entering their peronal space by just sitting with them and photographing them sitting with me. It’s fascinating how much people can tell about themselves by just sitting. Lot’s of people have a very clear memory of how their father or mother sat. I’m curiuos, maybe I can make the memory in my head more clear, making my mother more clear, by photographing people sitting in there own personal way.
